ALBUM REVIEW: Another North - The Missing Mouth

By: James Titford
On their sophomore album, “The Missing Mouth,” Another North have found a sound that plays to their strengths and grows from their previous work.
Their debut album, “Nomadic,” was not lacking – it was a strong first effort from a promising group. Since the album's release in 2014, the band has had almost four years to build and polish their sound, which is clear on their newest release.
Focused and polished are the best ways to describe the change in sound, as the album sounds bigger and cleaner than the previous effort.
The scattered acoustic segments are put to the wayside in favour of a more straightforward, electric approach to their accessible alt-rock style. This helps the album to feel more consistent and plays to the strengths of the band.
The layered guitar work, crisp drums, and passionate vocals are a combination that results in a grandiose sounding album, in both the loud energetic sections and the softer, sentimental moments. Coupled with the already immense sound, the crystal clear production makes the album shine.
All parts sound bright and vibrant, allowing the listener to aurally ingest the music with ease.
The high production value is immediately evident, with the opening track “Diversion” beginning with each instrument coming into the mix, one-by-one.
We start with guitars on a wave of effects, followed by drums establishing a rhythm and beat. Finally, the vocals are added to the layered delight, grabbing your attention for a brief but fun melody. All these carefully planned details bring out the best in the upbeat and dynamic songs.
"The Missing Mouth” is an uplifting rock album from a group that has come a long way since their first effort. It’s an immense album, perfectly produced, showcasing Another North’s music at its best.
This is one group worth watching, and of course, listening to.
Another North's release party will be at The Rock House on Friday, November 23, 2018 with guest Town House and Quote The Raven.
